Survival Choices – P 2

DR Efren Navarro

DR Efren Navarro

It turns out the antibiotic Doxycycline has a reputation for causing havoc with good gut flora.  Wonder why none of the Doxycycline cancer studies saw fit to mention the problem?

The Navarro test indicated fNHL was again in remission.   My running was starting to pick up again.  It looked like I had once again dodged a bullet.   Little did I realize I would soon be facing the most serious health challenge of my last twenty years?

Taking a well constructed cancer survival maintenance protocol found me confident entering 2011.   This was the “lull before the storm” for while cancer symptoms were fine everything in my body was not.    It was more and more difficult to have a routine bowel movement.    While my diet had not changed my bathroom habits were becoming a major problem.

Furiously searching on the Internet I was trying and get a handle on what was happening.   As the weeks dragged out the problem became more and more serious.    I was having to resort to numerous laxatives and was soon to the point of never having a normal bowel movement.

I resorted to daily coffee enemas just to keep everything working to some extent.   For whatever reason I was extremely slow figuring out what the culprit was.    Finally, it dawned on me I had Candida overgrowth.    This Candida was no mild garden variety; instead I had full, industrial strength shake you down to your boots; put your life at risk, killer Candida.

There are at least 1,000 well written Candida plans on the internet.   They all have some things in common and they all have some areas of disagreement.    And, I’m sure each of these well developed anti-Candida plans worked for their author and do work for some people.

However, a close reading of these on-line plans will soon bring forth dozens of areas where they disagree.  Some allow all fruits, some allow no fruits, some allow specific fruits, where is a person to start?

And meat, these meats are ok; these meats are to be avoided.  A little of this meat is fine; don’t touch any meat at any time.   Fish, ok? Fish not ok.

These none gluten forming grains are ok.   There is never a time you can eat any gluten forming grain.  Oatmeal is acceptable, no oatmeal ever, Irish hard grained oatmeal can be eaten.  The list of what you can and cannot eat goes on infinitely.    Pretty soon you are so overwhelmed with all these so called expert meal plans you just throw up your hands.

And, the same divergence of expert views we find with anti-Candida diets pervades anti-Candida supplements and anti-fungal drugs.   What is a sick person to do?

If you are like I was you will try them all.   If you’re lucky you will find one that works for you.  (I wasn’t lucky.)   Finally, you will throw up your hands and discover what you should have intuitively known prior to starting.

When it comes to Candida and its resolution we all are different.    All the well meaning friends and well written plans are probably not going to work for you.   It is doubtful anyone will stick precisely to the written plan they have adopted.   So, here is what I did.

First, I looked at my diet before Candida.   Organic vegetables,  free range eggs, organic fowl and meat, wild fish, green salads most everyday with lots of rainbow colors, little sugar, no boxed foods except oatmeal, brown rice, couscous, you’re getting the picture.    I ate little bread and it was designer bakery based, much like mother use to bake from scratch.   I like to think of my diet being what grandma and grandpa ate 75 years ago.

I switched off the Candida diets and went back on my regular diet of the last 50 years.   What do you know, my stomach started feeling better.   I wasn’t well but definitely better.

Second, I looked at the supplements I was taking and started paring down what had become a huge list to a much shorter list that contained mostly supplements I had already been taking prior the case of Doxycycline instigated  Candida I was now plagued with.

I visited an “MD” for the 1st time in years and got a prescription for Nystatin, an antifungal antibiotic that stays within the digestive system.   Nystatin is often useful for difficult Candida infections.

How’s this for a kick in the gut.  During a routine rectal digital exam by the Doctor a large bump is located about 4 inches in and blocking much of the fecal path needed for elimination.   Perhaps foolishly, I declined the referral to a specialist for further testing.   Instead concluding the bump was most likely an fNHL nodule since there is a ring of lymph nodes located in the very vicinity of the lump.

I did a digital self examination and found there were three lumps in a circle which I could monitor.    Unfortunately, I was again locating fNHL nodules on my face, neck, shoulder and chest.    It was apparent I had a full blown major relapse which had exploded in just a matter of two months.

While the Nystatin was helping I still had one severe Candida problem that was driving me crazy with constipation.     Even with coffee enemas, frequent laxatives and dozens of supportive supplements I was still plugged up in the bowel department continually.   It was so bad that several times I considered going to the MD or hospital to have my bowel blockage addressed.   What to do?
