Vitamin D & Cancer

Vitamin D

Vitamin D

Somewhere, about 10 years into my survival from fNHL (Follicular non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma), I started learning the importance of Vitamin D in cancer prevention.     In the early 1990’s the vast majority of doctors were still cautioning against getting direct sunlight and few, if any, were encouraging supplementation with Vitamin D.

A few studies indicated that people in seafaring countries were experiencing significantly lower cancer rates and the reduction may be due to Vitamin D levels.    I understood Cod-liver Oil was a source for Vitamin D.  And also understood excessive Cod Liver Oil could also lead to overdosing of Vitamin A.   Consequently, although I started taking a tablespoon of Carlson’s Cod Liver Oil daily I never took higher levels until years later.

Instead I ran marathon training runs midday, without a shirt or singlet, and allowed my body to manufacturer my Vitamin D naturally.   I think this strategy worked quite well for quite some time for I was in clinical remission and 100% symptom free for years.

Around year 15 of survival we moved to a more northern climate and my marathon training schedule changed from midday runs to very early morning.   It wasn’t too many months later that I had the symptoms of fNHL returning.   Before long I had a full blown cancer crisis going that required the building of an intensive anti-cancer protocol to overcome.   (A story for another day.)

Part of that cancer protocol was renewed effort to raise Vitamin D levels.   I began sunning midday, purchased a Vitamin D Lamp and upped my Carlson’s Cod Liver Oil intake to two tablespoons daily.

About this time I became aware of the work Dr. John J Cannell  (Vitamin D Council) and GrassRoots.Net (this group of scientists has become  known as Vitamin D’Action) were doing.    These doctors and scientists were posting findings that pretty much blew away everything the medical industry thought they knew about Vitamin D and all chronic diseases.   Not the least of which were multiple cancers that were prevented if you had adequate levels of Vitamin D.

D’Action is now several years into their education effort.   Vitamin D is beginning to be recognized as an extremely important vitamin (hormone) in the initiation and progression of all chronic illness including cancer.

Vitamin D’Action had/has made available to everyone that joins their effort a Vitamin D Hydroxy-25 blood spot test that is done at home.   To satisfy myself how accurate the home test was I took both a regular Vitamin D 25-Hydroxy test administered by Lab Corporation and one of the home spot tests from D’Action.  The results came back within 2 digits of each other.

My big surprise was both tests showed I was significantly Vitamin D deficient.   I had spent years taking supplements, sunning, using a sun lamp and I was Vitamin D deficient.    Lesson one.   There is only one way to know what your Vitamin D level is and that is to get tested.   If you don’t take a Vitamin D 25-Hydroxy test you have no idea what level your Vitamin D is.   The fact you have been supplementing doesn’t guarantee you have adequate levels.

Lesson two.    It turns out that cancer patients / survivors have a difficult time absorbing Vitamin D.   Could this be one reason they came down with cancer?   Probably is but we don’t have enough information to know if low levels of Vitamin D lead to cancer or cancer possibly leads to low levels of Vitamin D.

We have learned that CoQ10 levels can also be low in cancer patients / survivors.   Inadequate levels of CoQ10 can also inhibit Vitamin D absorption.   We don’t have an inexpensive test to measure Ubiquinol levels (processed CoQ10) in the body.    It is not clear whether existing serum tests for Ubiquinol / CoQ10 accurately reflect the level of CoQ10 in the body.   Thus paying for an expensive CoQ10 serum test may not be warranted.

In my own case I supplement both Vitamin D-3 and Ubiquinol.    (My recent post on Ubiquinol and Cancer.) This supplementing of Vitamin D-3 and Ubiquinol has raised my Vitamin D 25-Hydroxy level to 96 ng/ml.   This is in the upper range (75 ng/ml – 100 ng/ml) most knowledgeable doctors believe Vitamin D Hydroxy-25 should be in for positive cancer management.

Many of you may have missed out hearing about the importance of Vitamin D as it impacts cancer.   Unfortunately the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, and numerous oncology doctors are still in the dark ages when it comes to Vitamin D’s importance for cancer prevention and survival.

I predict these same institutions will be claiming the credit when improved Vitamin D levels in the populace start really bringing cancer rates down.   I’m predicting this very thing (lower cancer rates due increased levels of Vitamin D) to happen starting within the next five years.

Thought this Mercola Video contained some good “common sense” about skin exposure to the sun so added it to the post.  -  Pdazzer
