Web sites on the Internet strongly recommend seeking out a dentist that is affiliated with the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (AIOMT), The International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM) or similar holistic dentistry organization. That’s a great option if you happen to live in the right city or have unlimited finances. For the vast majority it is not a viable possibility.
This means you will need to find a local dentist competent to do the process and willing to work with you to make it as safe and comfortable as is practical.
Amalgam Illness
Following is a simplified list of the AIOMT recommendations.
Keep the fillings cool. Removal must be done under cold water spray.
Mercury vapor will be continuously released from the tooth. Therefore, A high volume evacuator tip should be kept near the tooth (1/2 inch) at all times.
Polishing amalgam can create very dangerous levels of mercury and should be avoided.
Patients having amalgam removed should be provided with an alternative air source and instructed to not breathe through their mouth during treatment.
If just air is used it should be clean and free of mercury vapor preferably from outside the dental office.
Particles of mercury alloy should be washed and vacuumed away as soon as they are generated.
The filling should be sectioned and removed in large pieces to reduce exposure.
All AIOMT members are agreed that whether or not a rubber dam is used the patient should be instructed to not breathe through their mouth or swallow the particles.
Immediately change patient’s protective wear and clean their face.
Consider appropriate nutritional support before, during and after removal.
Install room air purifiers or ionizers and fans for everyone’s well being.
It is doubtful you are going to find a local dentist equipped to comply with all the AIOMT guidelines. Instead you will be forced to find a dentist experienced in amalgam removal, and with composite replacement. You want a dentist that understands the serious nature of the procedure and your underlying illness. He or she must be willing to work with you to accomplish your amalgam replacement in a safe and efficient manner.
Amalgam Replacement
Both you and your dentist will want to schedule the procedure over a number of weeks and preferably months. I personally had eight amalgams removed and replaced. We scheduled the procedure over two office visits (3 on first visit and 5 on second visit) six weeks apart. In hindsight I should have done it in 3 office visits, one of 3 replacements, a second with 3 replacements and the final with 2 replacements.
The period following my initial visit with three removals was relatively easy. The period following the five removals was much more difficult. If you have the choice I highly suggest spreading it out over multiple visits.
The next post (#4) in this series I will address detoxification and supplement support during the actual replacement procedure(s) and during the periods immediately prior to replacement, between replacements and immediately following the completion of amalgam replacements.
Subsequent posts will address the long term detoxification process following the completion of amalgam fillings replacement. That period can vary in length from six months up to two or more years.
