Cancer Cure?

If you have not heard of “BAMLET” and “HAMLET” get ready to learn something that could change how you view mothers, cows and other mammals from this day forward.

For years I have dreamed of being able to purchase whole raw milk.  The Weston Price Foundation and others have documented the healthy effects for years.

And, the dairy industry, government and ignorant people have fought like the devil to make sure you and I would have to personally buy our own cow to get it.

Then, more and more Americans started pressuring their state legislators and slowly but surely raw milk began making a comeback one state at a time.  Imagine my delight when our number came up.   Low and behold a small organic farm operation opened within 3 miles of our residence and we were able to buy whole raw milk just like our grandparents were raised on many years ago.

Being a long term survivor and a student of cancer I was aware of several anti-cancer properties in whole raw milk.  (CLA) is a newly discovered good fat called “conjugated linoleic acid” that may be a potent cancer fighter.  In animal studies, very small amounts of CLA have blocked all three stages of cancer: 1) initiation, 2) promotion, and 3) metastasis.

Most anti-cancer agents block only one of these stages. What’s more, CLA has slowed the growth of an unusually wide variety of tumors, including cancers of the skin, breast, prostate, and colon.

Linoleic acid, vitamin D and other nutrient intakes in the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: an Italian case-control study. Our study suggests that a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin D is associated with a reduced risk of NHL.

However, I was not aware of what appears to be new and superior anti-cancer properties found in all mammal milk.   The first identified was found in mother’s milk and given the tag “HAMLET”.

HAMLET (Human alpha-lactalbumin Made Lethal to Tumor cells) triggers selective tumor cell death in vitro and limits tumor progression in vivo. Dying cells show features of apoptosis but it is not clear if the apoptotic response explains tumor cell death. This study examined the contribution of apoptosis to cell death in response to HAMLET. Apoptotic changes like caspase activation, phosphatidyl serine externalization, chromatin condensation were detected in HAMLET-treated tumor cells, but caspase inhibition or Bcl-2 over-expression did not prolong cell survival and the caspase response was Bcl-2 independent. HAMLET translocates to the nuclei and binds directly to chromatin, but the death response was unrelated to the p53 status of the tumor cells. p53 deletions or gain of function mutations did not influence the HAMLET sensitivity of tumor cells. Chromatin condensation was partly caspase dependent, but apoptosis-like marginalization of chromatin was also observed. The results show that tumor cell death in response to HAMLET is independent of caspases, p53 and Bcl-2 even though HAMLET activates an apoptotic response. The use of other cell death pathways allows HAMLET to successfully circumvent fundamental anti-apoptotic strategies that are present in many tumor cells.

Not long after HAMLET’s discovery a California software consultant’s wife discovered the Swedish study above and informed her husband, who had prostrate cancer, of the findings.  Below is an excerpt from an newspaper article done at the time..

Howard Cohen, a Palo Alto software consultant with a doctorate in theoretical physics, says he can live with the lack of medical evidence. Indeed, he’s his own research study. Cohen believes that the twice-weekly smoothies he makes with breast milk and fruit have helped put his prostate cancer into remission and allowed him to avoid more invasive treatment, such as surgery.

“You give this stuff to newborn babies,” Cohen said. “It can’t be toxic.”

After Cohen was diagnosed in 1999, his wife found an article about the Swedish research on breast milk and cancer cells. A friend who was lactating donated some milk, and Cohen soon found that his levels of prostate-specific antigen, a warning sign of cancerous cells, dropped back to normal. His doctor, a UC-San Francisco urologist, was skeptical but open to Cohen’s self-treatment as long as his blood work looked fine. Cohen undergoes blood tests and other screenings religiously, and in the past 2 1/2 years, there have been no signs of cancer, he said. It’s possible, of course, that without the breast milk, Cohen’s prostate cancer might have grown so slowly that his health would not be compromised; that happens in many cases.

Still, Cohen believes. After all, when he temporarily stopped the breast milk, his PSA levels went up. “It works,” he says simply.

Shortly after the discover of HAMLET’s anticancer properties researchers discovered bovine (cows) milk contained a very similar substance they named “BAMLET”.   BAMLET like HAMLET is there like a gift from mother nature.

Cow's Milk

A complex of human alpha-lactalbumin and oleic acid (HAMLET) was originally isolated from human milk as a potent anticancer agent. It kills a wide range of transformed cells of various origins while leaving nontransformed healthy cells largely unaffected both in vitro and in vivo. Importantly, purified alpha-lactalbumins from other mammals form complexes with oleic acid that show biological activities similar to that of HAMLET. The mechanism by which these protein-lipid complexes kill tumor cells is, however, largely unknown. Here, we show that complex of bovine alpha-lactalbumin and oleic acid (BAMLET), the bovine counterpart of HAMLET, kills tumor cells via a mechanism involving lysosomal membrane permeabilization. BAMLET shows potent cytotoxic activity against eight cancer cell lines tested, whereas nontransformed NIH-3T3 murine embryonic fibroblasts are relatively resistant. BAMLET accumulates rapidly and specifically in the endolysosomal compartment of tumor cells and induces an early leakage of lysosomal cathepsins into the cytosol followed by the activation of the proapoptotic protein Bax. Ectopic expression of three proteins known to stabilize the lysosomal compartment, i.e. heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), Hsp70-2, and lens epithelium-derived growth factor, confer significant protection against BAMLET-induced cell death, whereas the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2, caspase inhibition, and autophagy inhibition fail to do so. These data indicate that BAMLET triggers lysosomal cell death pathway in cancer cells, thereby clarifying the ability of alpha-lactalbumin:oleate complexes to kill highly apoptosis-resistant tumor cells.

Emerging Health Properties of Whey Proteins and Their Clinical Implications

Curds & Whey

The nursery rhyme “Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet (small stool) eating her curds and whey. …” is recognition of the fact that over the centuries “curds and whey”, the two major components of cow’s milk, have been widely accepted as part of a healthy diet. Milk provides complete nourishment for the neonate for six months from birth, containing factors that help develop various organ systems including the brain, immune system, and the intestine. Importantly it provides immune protection at a time when the neonates own immune system, though fully developed, is albeit immature. Many adult consumers include cow’s milk as part of a healthy diet as it provides protein and essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, in particular calcium for strong bones. There is a growing appreciation that milk, and in particular whey, contains components that not only provide nutrition, but can also prevent and attenuate disease, or augment conventional therapies, when delivered in amounts that exceed normal dietary intakes. This paper reviews the emerging health properties of whey proteins and their clinical implications.

Ok, here is what I do.   Since I have a wonderful raw milk dairy where I can easily access raw milk it has become a part of my daily cancer prevention protocol.  While I have some doubts raw milk by itself will cure or prevent cancer I am quite convinced raw milk is an important anti-cancer tool and deserves to be considered for anyone’s regimen or protocol, assuming they are not allergic or intolerant to raw milk specifically.
