Red Wine Anyone?

Resveratrol in Red Wine

“Rochester researchers showed for the first time that a natural antioxidant found in grape skins and red wine can help destroy pancreatic cancer cells by reaching to the cell’s core energy source, or mitochondria, and crippling its function.”  (News-Medical.Net) The study is published in the March 2008 edition of Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology.

“Evidence is reviewed supporting a general hypothesis that….all hallmarks of cancer, including aerobic glycolysis (Warburg effect), can be linked to impaired mitochondrial function and energy metabolism.” …DR T.N. Seyfried, et al.  Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. January 2010

Nobel of Medicine Prize Winner DR Otto Warburg theorized all cancer was caused by faulty energy processing in the “mitochondria” or energy center of the cell.   This recent Rochester study and others are bringing resurgence to Warburg’s theory.

Healthy cells prefer to breakdown blood sugar (glucose) into fuel in an oxygen rich environment.    ( Ah Ha, that’s why Pdazzler is such a stickler for measuring saliva pH on first arising.)   Processing glucose and other fuels (i.e. fat) with oxygen is the way healthy blood cells work most of the time.   Normal cells are also capable of generating some energy from glucose in a low oxygen situation (i.e. the marathon runner hits the wall) but they far prefer an oxygen rich environment.

Enter our enemy, the cancer cell.  In cancer cells the mitochondria (energy centers) are not functioning normally.   Unable to process blood sugar in an oxygen rich state, these cancer cells use a course of action that uses very large amounts of glucose for energy.    (Ah Ha, that’s why Pdazzler encourages diets void of high fructose corn syrup and minimizing refined sugars, processed carbohydrates, etc)

Ok, so limit the intake of “sugar” and processed carbohydrates (easily converted to sugar), that makes sense.

I thought the title was “Red Wine Anyone”?

Resveratrol (an anti-oxidant found in red wine) enters the picture and is fast becoming the most exciting supplement since Vitamin D became the rage a few years back.

“The most recent findings suggest that forcing cancer cells into mitochondrial metabolism efficiently suppresses cancer growth…This review summarizes published evidence on the essential interaction of tumor growth and mitochondrial metabolism, implicating novel approaches for the prevention and treatment of malignant disease.”  Oxidative Metabolism in Cancer Growth (2006)

Researchers in Rochester showed for the first time that resveratrol  (a natural anti-oxidant found in grape skins and red wine) can help destroy pancreatic cancer cells by reaching into the mitochondria (cells energy source) and altering its ability to create energy.

Pharmaceutical companies are now in a headlong rush to find or create pharmaceutical drugs that mimic this ability of resveratrol and working overtime to create patentable forms of reservitrol for use with chemotherapy.

Meanwhile, those facing an active cancer challenge have a new arrow in their quiver.   I’m recommending those managing cancer challenges consider adding resveratrol to their daily protocols.    It would seem prudent those currently in remission consider the using resveratrol as a supplement as well.

Careful review of the sources cited indicate resveratrol will support natures chemotherapies (B-17 Metabolic, Oleander, etc) and perhaps even lead to cancer cells apoptosis on its own.    Since absorption is a problem (much like curcumin) it is suggested your supplemental resveratrol be taken with fat or liquid (flax oil, coconut oil, hemp milk, fresh farm (raw).   And, there is nothing wrong with a small glass of dark red wine once in a while.
